FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR THE OPEN CALL COMPETITION NEW FRONTIERS AT SOUTHMERE LAKE, THAMESMEAD. THE ARTIST’S FILMS WILL BE SCREENED DURING THE LIGHT THE WAY FESTIVAL, 4TH MARCH 2023.

Beth Walker - Beneath (Teaser)

Light the Way in partnership with Peabody intends to bring communities together through unexpected and playful light installations that capture the magic, awe and storytelling of Thamesmead’s landscapes.

Hive Curates is proud to announce the finalists of the Open Call competition ‘New Frontiers’. Launched in December 2022, Hive invited new media artists to submit films to be screened at Southmere Lake on a 25m wide x 12m high water screen. The selected artists intend to shift our perspective; delving deeper into our fragile habitats, underground networks and waterways, offering the viewer an intimate experience of our environments. Themes of renewal, growth and connection, remind us of the delicate symbiosis of humans and nature.

The finalists that will be screened on the evening of Light the Way are:

  • Beth Walker - “Beneath

  • Emily Stapleton Jefferis - “Intimacy with the Other

  • John Cheung - “Platystomata Poisoned

  • Simon Rattigan - “The Odds and Evens

Beth Walker - Beneath

A meditation on growth, connection and symbiosis, inspired by the entangled lives of fungi. Made at the Royal College of Art, this experimental  film takes us into a hidden world where edges blur, connection is vital, and life thrives through togetherness.

John Cheung - Platystomata Poisoned

John Cheung - Platystomata Poisoned

Platystomata Poisoned, it is a recording of a real-time generated animation. The animation presents an algorithmic creature living in a digital space. Inspired by aquarium creatures, DNA double helix and oil-polluted water surface.

Simon Rattigan - The Odd and Evens

Local Thamesmead artist Simon Rattigan will be featuring The Odds and Evens. See anthropomorphized numbers racing around a virtual zoetrope, interrupted by images showing the remnants of burnt trees from the previous summer’s heat wave and wildfires. Themes of renewal in nature and social systems are reflected through the interpretation of numbers, data and physical experiences.

Emily Stapleton Jefferis - Intimacy with the Other

Shot in London, intimacy with the other seeks to position the viewer as an erotic interlocutor with the inhabitants of the local rivers and waterways. How might it feel as a hermaphrodite snail smelling the breeding season for the first time?

Hive Curates decided to use water screen technology to create a surreal and magical experience for local residents, allowing nature to become the centerpiece in this year’s edition of the Light Festival. Please note: A water screen is a projection medium that uses a thin film of water to project video content. The pump is marine grade steel and environmentally friendly, it even helps to oxygenate the water. We chose a water screen as it was the most environmentally friendly option, constructing a screen for one night would have resulted in a lot of material wastage.
