FIELD by Hive is a meanwhile activation in Enfield Town’s Palace Exchange shopping centre. We’re an artist collective, a workshop space, a shop and a gallery where we showcase local and sustainable artists. We opened in November 2021 and we have the space until September 2022 with the option to extend.

FIELD stocks art, books, pottery, soaps, candles, chocolate and much more. We have a focus on locally made and ethically sourced, both of which were essential aspects of the pop-up when it was in the development stage and they remain at the core today. FIELD is all about local artists and local customers, creating a circular economy and giving back to our area.

FIELD has delivered four new creative workspaces in Enfield Town, all currently rented out to local artists. It has provided one full-time job which was part of the government’s Kickstart scheme, designed to get young people into work. Currently there are over thirty creatives represented downstairs which functions as a shop and gallery space; upstairs in the shared studio space there have been over forty workshops delivered already. This is part of Hive’s wider goal; to promote creativity throughout the borough and increase participation in the community.

We have hosted a whole range of workshops so far and are looking to build on their success. From textile design to pinhole photography to ceramics and watercolour, we are trying to provide something for everyone. Our classes are specifically designed to function well for all levels, encouraging participation. They are always small groups which means that everyone can have as much or as little instruction and guidance as they would like.

These workshops are one of the highlights of this activation, with over 500 attendees across a six-month period. FIELD has already contributed over £10,000 back to the local economy, a figure which will continue to grow as we expand over the coming months.

One of our latest goals for FIELD is to collaborate with local coffee vendors, such as ENfood to establish a coffee bar in store so that we become a resting point for shoppers in Enfield town. We want to build on the calm, relaxing and friendly vibe already established in the shop, becoming a destination for anyone wants to shop and drink locally.
